Colorectal cancer often begins without noticeable symptoms, which is why routine screening plays such an important role in prevention and early detection.
During Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, McKenzie Health System is encouraging community members to talk with their healthcare provider about colon cancer screening, including a colonoscopy.
For many adults, it is recommended to begin discussing screening at age 45. Some individuals may need to start earlier based on family history or other risk factors. A colonoscopy can detect colorectal cancer in its earliest stages, when it is often easier to treat, and can even prevent cancer by identifying and removing precancerous polyps before they develop further.
“Colorectal cancer often does not cause symptoms in its early stages,” said Lindsey D. Rieck, DO, General Surgeon at McKenzie Health System. “That’s why screening is so important. A colonoscopy allows us to find and remove polyps before they turn into cancer and to detect cancer early when treatment is most effective.”
A colonoscopy is a safe, routine procedure performed by a trained surgeon. Patients are sedated for comfort, and the procedure typically takes less than an hour. Most individuals return home the same day and resume normal activities shortly after.
In addition to identifying and removing polyps, colonoscopies provide valuable insight into overall colon health. For individuals experiencing symptoms such as changes in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, or unexplained weight loss, screening and evaluation are especially important.
“At McKenzie, we are focused on patient safety, comfort, and making sure our community has access to high-quality surgical care close to home,” added Dr. Rieck. “Screening is one of the most powerful tools we have to reduce the impact of colorectal cancer in our community.”
McKenzie Health System’s General Surgery team provides screening colonoscopies and follow-up care locally, helping patients avoid unnecessary travel while receiving expert care from experienced surgeons.
This March, take time for your health. Start the conversation with your provider about colorectal cancer screening.
