Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehab does not change what has already happened to your heart, but it can help you improve your heart’s future. This medically supervised program is designed to help improve your cardiovascular health. Exercise gets your heart pumping with the help of your cardiovascular system. You’ll learn how to get your body moving in ways that promote heart health, manage risk factors, choose good nutrition, quit smoking, and tackle everyday sources of stress.

Cardiac Rehab​The goals of cardiac rehab are to lower your risk for a future cardiac event, learn how to eat better and lose weight, and gain a better quality of life. Patients learn how to control and alleviate symptoms associated with cardiac impairment, restore their functional capabilities, and how carry out activities of daily living with ease.

You can expect exercise counseling, training, and dietary education on weight control, stress management, pharmacy education, and pain management.

Phases of Rehab

Phase 1

Begins in the hospital after a heart attack, heart surgery, or other cardiac treatment. Initial phase includes education about event, new medication, and guidelines for home activities.

Phase 2

Begins 2 to 6 weeks after a cardiac event. It includes continuous telemetry monitoring and 30 minutes of exercise divided into shorter segments on a variety of exercise equipment. All exercises are conducted at a safe and comfortable level that is still effective. This phase also includes education on exercising safely and effectively, risk factor modifications, dietary guidelines, and smoking cessation as needed.

Phase 3

This optional maintenance program is available at McKenzie Health System for patients who have completed Phase 2 of McKenzie‘s cardiac rehabilitation program or have completed McKenzie‘s pulmonary rehabilitation program.

Phase 3 is designed to help patients continue to maintain a healthier lifestyle through supervised exercise sessions and health education. Phase 3 is not covered by insurances and will require a small charge for the patient.
