November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and McKenzie Health System is reminding the community that both heredity and lifestyle play important roles in diabetes risk. With nearly one in ten Americans living with diabetes, knowing your family history—and your own numbers—can make a lasting difference.
“Awareness and education are essential,” shared Kris Kreiner, RD, Registered Dietitian at McKenzie Health System. “While diabetes can run in families, lifestyle and early detection make all the difference. Knowing your numbers, working with your provider, and taking small steps toward healthier habits can help prevent or better manage diabetes.”
McKenzie Health System offers a Diabetes Self-Management Education Service (DSMES) accredited by the American Diabetes Association. This comprehensive program equips individuals with the tools and knowledge needed for day-to-day diabetes management through personalized guidance from a multidisciplinary team. Classes are available by provider referral and are typically covered by insurance. To learn more or register, call 810-648-0592.
Throughout November, McKenzie Health System will share weekly messages on social media and facility monitors to encourage healthy habits, promote early testing, and highlight local resources such as the McKenzie Diabetes Support Group.
