McKenzie Health System Medical Director Dr. Mustafa Mark Hamed Reappointed to State Physician Leadership Role

McKenzie Health System is pleased to share that Emergency Department Medical Director Dr. Mustafa Mark Hamed has been reappointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer to serve as a physician on the Michigan Board of Medicine for a second term.

In recognition of his leadership and service, Dr. Hamed was elected by fellow Board members to serve as Vice Chair of the Michigan Board of Medicine throughout 2025 and is anticipated to assume the role of Chair beginning in January 2026.

Dr. Hamed’s reappointment reflects his continued leadership and expertise in health care and emergency medical services. He currently serves as EMS medical director for Sanilac County and as medical director for the Thumb counties of Huron, Lapeer, Sanilac and Tuscola, as well as for District Health Department #2, serving Alcona, Iosco, Ogemaw and Oscoda counties.

In addition to his role at McKenzie Health System, Dr. Hamed is an attending family medicine physician with Henry Ford Health. Together, these roles reflect the trust and respect he has earned locally and statewide to help guide physician standards and patient safety across Michigan.

“Dr. Hamed plays a vital role in ensuring high-quality care, strong medical oversight and coordination across emergency and health care services in our region,” said Steve Barnett, president and CEO of McKenzie Health System. “His continued service and leadership at the state level reflect not only his commitment to McKenzie Health System and the communities we serve, but also the confidence placed in him to represent physicians and patients throughout Michigan.”

“Serving on the Michigan Board of Medicine is a responsibility I take seriously, and I’m honored by the trust of my colleagues,” said Dr. Hamed. “I remain committed to protecting patients, supporting physicians and ensuring that community-based and rural health care systems like McKenzie - along with public health -have a strong voice at the state level.”

Dr. Hamed also contributes to the education of future health care professionals as an associate clinical professor with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and the Central Michigan University College of Medicine. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine in the Cayman Islands.

His reappointment term begins Jan. 1, 2026, and extends through Dec. 31, 2029, ensuring continued medical leadership and collaboration benefiting McKenzie Health System, local EMS agencies and communities across the state of Michigan.
