Students who participated from 5 schools

From dialing 911 to touring ambulances, third-grade students from CPS, Peck, Sandusky, Frostick, and Meyer Elementary Schools got an up-close look at what it takes to be a first responder during this year’s interactive 911 School Visit, hosted by McKenzie Health System and local emergency services.

Designed to build confidence and spark curiosity, the annual visits introduced students to the full spectrum of emergency services. From making a mock 911 call to speaking directly with a dispatcher, students learned how to respond in a crisis and what happens when help is on the way. They also explored emergency vehicles, including ambulances, police cruisers, and fire trucks, and met the professionals behind the scenes.

“Giving kids a chance to learn, ask questions, and explore emergency careers not only prepares them for the unexpected, but also plants the seeds for future paths in service and healthcare,” said Billi Jo Hennika, Chief Operating Officer at McKenzie Health System. “We love offering this hands-on learning experience and seeing their interest grow.”

Students discovered a range of emergency careers, including police officers, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, nurses, and dispatchers. For many, this was their first opportunity to see these roles up close and imagine themselves in those shoes someday.

McKenzie Health System extends a heartfelt thank you to all the local heroes who made these visits possible: Sanilac County Central Dispatch, Sanilac County Sheriff Department, Croswell EMS, Sanilac EMS, Tri County Ambulance, Croswell Police Department, Lexington Police Department, Peck Police Department, Sandusky Police Department, Elk Township Fire Department, and a special thank you to schools for their continued support and participation.

Through collaboration, education, and a little inspiration, this event continues to empower students with the knowledge they need to act in emergencies and the confidence to dream big.
