National Healthcare Decision Day, which highlights the importance of Advance Directives, takes center stage at McKenzie Health System’s April Lunch and Learn Workshop scheduled for Wednesday, April 17, 2019, from Noon to 1 p.m., in the McKenzie Health System Dining Room. Lunch and Learn is a community education series held on the third Wednesday of the month. The cost for the workshop is $5, and lunch is included in the price. Pre-registration is required by calling 810-648-6117 or emailing

“People may be hesitant to talk about Advance Directives, but they are critical for assuring that your medical wishes are carried out in the event that you are unable to communicate with your doctor,” shares Louise Blasius, LMSW, LPC, Director of Human Services at McKenzie Health System and Workshop presenter. “Advance Directives are particularly important for your family members since they are then aware of what your medical wishes are, which will help to relieve some stress during an emergency situation. Participants will also learn about the Peace of Mind Registry, a website established by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The website provides additional information, a link to download an advance directive form for completion, and the ability to upload a completed form to the registry. In conclusion, participants will be given a legal fill-in-the-blank advance directive for their personal use.”

“Lunch and Learn attendees can be assured that this important topic will be presented in a sensitive, personal manner, and questions will be welcomed,” reports Blasius. “In addition, audience members are able to enjoy a nutritious meal, making it a productive and pleasant way to spend lunchtime. We encourage people to reserve their space as soon as possible!”
