During a visit to the Emergency and Medical/Surgery Departments, Sandy’s mother was often cold; however, the organization’s only blanket warmer was located solely in the Operating Room to warm blankets for patients recovering from surgery. To help future patients stay warm and comfortable, Sandy, a former employee, and her husband Scott launched a fundraiser for a new blanket warmer in June, raising more than $3,500 in less than three months.

Located in Sandusky, SugarTown Sweets Shop offers “sweet treats for every day and every occasion.” After a successful first year in business, Scott and Sandy “decided this was a way we could give back to our community,” even naming a new cupcake “the blanket warmer.” In addition to a GoFundMe page, the Edgley’s offered a donation jar on the bakery’s counter; special sales; and each Tuesday throughout the summer, cupcakes were delivered to the hospital for employees to purchase to make it easier for them to support the cause. A special donation was also made in memory of Sandy’s mom, Madaleen Glaxner, which helped accomplish the end-of-year goal.

“While an additional blanket warmer was on our wish list, we had to tackle other purchases that were higher on the “needs” list, so this campaign and donation is an incredible gift for our hospital,” said Billi Jo Hennika, Chief Operating Officer at McKenzie Health System. “We truly appreciate Scott and Sandy’s dedication and compassion and are lucky to have such wonderful community members who care so deeply about others and are willing to step out and take action.”
