Achieving Strength Close to Home - Dennis Quandt’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Story

For Dennis Quandt, Sanilac County has always been home. As a lifelong resident, proud farmer, husband, father, and grandfather, his days have long been centered around hard work, family, and caring for the land he loves.

So when a heart procedure left him feeling weak and unable to keep up with his daily routine, Dennis knew getting back to his life would take time, effort, and the right support.

After undergoing a heart valve procedure, Dennis turned to the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program at McKenzie Health System to regain his strength.

“I was really weak after my valve procedure, and this program helped me get my strength back,” he shared.

Through guided exercise and close monitoring, Dennis began to rebuild his endurance and confidence. But what stood out just as much as the physical progress was the environment.

“The staff are very knowledgeable and do a terrific job,” Dennis said. “You get a very warm welcome every time you walk in.”

As he progressed through the program, Dennis noticed real improvements, not just in how he felt during rehab, but in his everyday life.

“I feel more capable doing things at home and on the farm again,” he said. “That means everything to me.”

Even after completing the initial rehabilitation program, Dennis made the decision to continue his journey through McKenzie’s Phase 3 maintenance program, where patients can keep up their progress in a supportive setting.

“I don’t always feel like going, but every time I do, I’m glad I went,” he said. “When I’m done and heading home, I feel so much better. That’s what makes it worth it.”

For Dennis, having access to this level of care close to home has made all the difference.

“Having this here locally makes it easy to be part of my routine,” he said. “It’s important to have care like this right here in our community.”

Today, Dennis continues to stay active, doing what he loves most and remaining deeply rooted in the life he has built in Sanilac County.

“I’m very proud to be a farmer,” he said. “And this program helps me keep doing that.”

“I would absolutely recommend it,” he said. “You really notice how much better you feel.”
