McKenzie Health System is joining rural communities across the country in celebrating National Rural Health Day on Thursday, November 20, a day that honors the people, places, and partnerships that keep rural America strong.

This year, the focus goes beyond the walls of the hospital. McKenzie Health System is spotlighting the importance of proactive, community-wide health—supporting the well-being of individuals and families both inside and outside the workplace.

“Healthy communities make healthy workforces,” said Billi Jo Hennika, Chief Operating Officer of McKenzie Health System. “When people have access to care, resources, and support close to home, everyone benefits—employees, families, and local businesses alike.”

McKenzie’s commitment to proactive health can be seen throughout its services and outreach efforts:

  • Community wellness and education: Healthy Living Together sessions and support groups for diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and heart health empower residents to take small, consistent steps toward better living.
  • Workforce Wellness and Occupational Health: Partnering with employers across Sanilac County and neighboring areas, McKenzie supports healthier, safer workplaces while caring for individuals beyond the job site.
  • Access to care close to home: Family healthcare, diagnostic imaging, urgent care, and rehabilitation services make it easier for residents to receive high-quality care without leaving the community.
  • Building for the future: The new hospital facility represents an investment in rural healthcare—modern spaces and technology designed around people, community, and the future of care in the Thumb region.

As part of its celebration of National Rural Health Day, McKenzie Health System will also host guided hospital tours for high school students from throughout the area. These tours provide students with an inside look at local healthcare careers—from clinical and technical roles to leadership and support positions—and highlight the meaningful opportunities available in rural communities.

“Investing in the health of our youth and inspiring them to see a future in healthcare is part of how we build long-term wellness and sustainability,” Hennika said. “It’s about showing them that they can grow, work, and make a difference right here at home.”

National Rural Health Day, recognized each year on the third Thursday of November, celebrates the “Power of Rural”—the strength, resilience, and innovation of small communities that deliver big impact. Nearly 61 million Americans live in rural areas, and their access to local healthcare is a vital part of each region’s stability and growth.

“We’re proud to be part of that story,” Hennika added. “Every wellness class, every clinic visit, every employer partnership—these are investments in our shared future. Together, we’re building more than a healthy community; we’re building hope, opportunity, and a stronger rural Michigan.”
