New Equipment at MHS for Cataract Surgery

????????????????????????????????????

Sandusky, Mich. – McKenzie Health System (MHS) has performed cataract eye surgery for a number of years, but now new equipment makes the surgery easier and more effective. “The Centurion® Vision System allows older cataracts and very near-sighted eyes to be corrected much easier and with better outcomes,” explained Nicholas Leone, MD, an Ophthalmologist seeing patients at McKenzie Health System’s Outpatient Clinic. “This couldn’t have come at a better time since we’re seeing an increase in the need for cataract surgeries.”

According to a recent report by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, cataracts affect more than 22 million people in the U.S. and, by 2020, may rise to 30 million people. Cataract surgery is performed to treat the clouding of the typically clear lens of an eye by replacing it with an artificial lens to help achieve clear vision. The surgery is usually an outpatient procedure that takes about an hour.

“The Centurion® system allows me to tailor the procedure to each patient’s needs,” said Dr. Leone. “No more one-size-fits-all approaches as the need for surgery increases and we treat a larger variety of patients!”

The Centurion® is redefining the standard of performance in cataract surgery. One of the biggest enhanced control features for the system is a wireless foot pedal that allows more freedom to position around the patient and accommodate various body sizes. “It helps me be more efficient and provide heighten safety as I work around patients’ eyes,” said Dr. Leone.

The system also allows the surgeon to emulsify and aspirate the lens in the eye, while replacing aspirated fluid and lens materials with balanced salt solution. This means more comfort for patients and less chance of eye infections. The Centurion® is manufactured by Alcon®, the most trusted leader in eye care with a 70-year heritage.

Most cataract surgeries are covered by health insurance and Medicare plans. To find out if you are a candidate for this surgery, please call 810-648-4838.
