MHS Provides New Physical Therapy Space at Hospital

auxiliary donationSandusky, Mich. – Creating more space for clients in recovery, McKenzie Health System recently renovated a room at the hospital and added equipment to have available for physical therapy and the Swing Bed Program, which helps patients transition from hospital to home.

McKenzie Auxiliary purchased the new equipment for the space, including parallel bars, a raised exercise mat table and a NUSTEP exercise recumbent stepper, while the hospital’s maintenance team performed the construction work on the space. The new room opened last November.

“We are thrilled to have more space to serve both physical and occupational therapy clients as well as our Swing Bed Program and are incredibly grateful to McKenzie Auxiliary and our maintenance team,” said Jennifer Long, PT,DPT, Director of Rehabilitation Services, McKenzie Health System. “We can now help more patients get the care they need close to home.”

A Swing Bed Program is a federally approved program that enables small rural hospitals to provide 24-hour skilled nursing care in an inpatient hospital setting. The program allows a physician to transition or “swing” a patient’s care from acute medical services to skilled nursing or rehabilitation services, providing a good option for patients within the local community who require skilled nursing care and want to stay close to home and family.

McKenzie Health System’s specialized program is designed to meet patients’ needs while recovering from illness or surgery. An experienced team of physicians, nurses, therapists, dieticians, case managers and social workers combine to support individual care and goals. Services include 24-hour nursing care, rehabilitation, in-house lab and X-ray, physicians services as well as physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapy.

In addition, the larger space accommodates recreational activities for patients while they are residents in the Swing Bed Program.  For more information about McKenzie Health System’s Swing Bed Program, call 810-648-6170 or visit their website at www.mckenziehealth.org.
