Mark Hamed, MD, earns Master of Public Health degree

Mark Hamed, MDMcKenzie Health System (MHS) is pleased to announce that Dr. Mark Hamed, Medical Director of the Departments of Emergency and Hospitalist Medicine, has recently earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of West Florida, an intense program that is among only a handful of those fully accredited by the Council for Education of Public Health. He had previously attended the University of Michigan earning a Bachelor in Pre-Medical Biology and Health Policy Studies degree; and then completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) while, at the same time, earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree with a focus in Healthcare Management in 2008.

“Initially I thought that by being a physician with an MBA degree I would be well-equipped for the finance and business side of medicine,” reports Dr. Hamed.  “However, because of the shift in direction of healthcare delivery in the United States, I decided to pursue the MPH to be better prepared to understand and manage this change.”

“The previous model for medical care, which was one of only treating illness, is changing to focus more on the prevention of illness and the maintenance of a healthy community while efficiently using increasingly scarce healthcare resources,” Hamed continues. “Steve Barnett, MHS President and CEO, echoed the same vision with me for a transformed healthcare delivery system over 5 years ago.  Sharing that vision has been vital as MHS moves to adapt and adjust to that new direction, making our job of focusing on our populations’ overall health an exciting experience!”

Steve Barnett agrees, “Dr. Hamed’s MPH degree is well aligned with the direction in which healthcare is going today, and McKenzie Health System is proud of Dr. Hamed for achieving this valuable degree!”

“It took me six long years, with the support and patience of my wife, children and parents, to complete the MPH degree while finishing up residency training and working full-time,” shares Dr. Hamed. “Having this degree will help me in my role at MHS to continue to deliver high quality, focused patient care in this ever-changing healthcare environment.”

Dr. Hamed has held his position at MHS since the summer of 2011. In addition to his role there, he maintains senior staff physician privileges and faculty membership with Henry Ford Health System’s residency programs. He currently is the Executive Treasurer of, and on the Board of Directors for, the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians. He also is an associate clinical instructor with Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan and with Central Michigan University College of Medicine based in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
