Surgical Services RN (FT)

Title: Surgical Services – RN

Department: Nursing – Surgical Services

Status: Full Time Position. Requires weekend and holiday rotation.

Hours: Primarily Day Shift. Hours may be adjusted in response to workload demands. Low census may be utilized in accordance with hospital policy. Requires the sharing of 24 hour on-call time.

Qualifications/Position Requirements:

  1. Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  2. Current Michigan Board of Nursing license as a Registered Nurse with required renewals
  3. Previous experience in nursing leadership/supervision preferred.
  4. A minimum of one year supervisory experience such as charge nurse, relief charge nurse, supervisor, relief supervisor or head nurse is desirable.
  5. Knowledge of current trends and techniques in nursing.
  6. BLS Certification required within 3 months of hire and recertification as required
  7. ACLS, required within 1 year of hire and recertification as required
  8. Basic Arrhythmia Course required.
  9. 1-2 years Surgical nursing experience (Pre-Op, Post-Op, Endoscopy, Operative and Ambulatory case), required.
  10. Knowledge of outpatient infusions/injections.
  11. Knowledge of principals and practice of surgical asepsis as it applies to the surgical room as well as proper handling of tissue specimens, cultures and smears.
  12. Knowledge of various steps of different operations to be able to anticipate surgeons' needs.
  13. Good understanding of various instruments used for each type of operation and proper setup of surgical room.
  14. Thorough knowledge of post anesthesia recovery care and endoscopy procedures.
  15. Ability to establish effective working relationships and effective communication with peers, patients, families, physicians and all other support hospital & external personnel
  16. Ability to function in a leadership position by serving as a resource person and assuming leadership role in emergency/crisis situation, delegating specific tasks to appropriately trained personnel.
  17. Supports and contributes to the total hospital system by maintaining a hospital-wide perspective and serving on department/hospital committees.
  18. Influence the direction of professional nursing practice by maintaining a positive perspective/attitude.
  19. Demonstrates leadership and technical skills essential to job.
  20. Demonstrates ability to handle multiple tasks in a stressful situation while maintaining composure and excellence in the delivery of nursing services.

Job Summary:

  1. Under the direction of Director of Nursing Services and Surgical Services Manager. The Surgical Services Registered Nurse provides direct patient care, performs all duties to meet patient care needs for all patient populations and oversees the care provided by other nursing staff. Performs all required nursing duties/roles/procedures for all patient populations to produce consistent high-quality services. Provides pertinent applicable documentation; provides patients with health promotion and disease prevention education. Responsible for interacting with hospital staff and/or providers regarding patient care, concerns, and conflicts by identifying and assisting in the resolutions. Frequent, daily contacts with patients and their families. Frequent contact with other hospital employees, and physicians/providers. Responsible and accountable for maintaining performance skills. This position summary contains the most relevant duties and responsibilities and does not exclude other assignments not mentioned.

Role/Position Definition:

The afterhour’s clinic will be open seven days a week, including holidays, consisting of weekday afternoon shifts and weekend day shifts. This role will be a combination of telehealth and traditional clinic setting. During telehealth clinic the Medical Assistant will function as a Telehealth Facilitator serving in a generalist role to support and manage clinical encounters from the patient and provider location as the site tele-presenter. You will use state of the art telemedicine technologies to bring providers and patients together, you will manage real time telehealth appointments between patients and providers, coordinate patient education activities, handle technical and scheduling activities and other program support duties as assigned at the facility. Also responsible for the direct care of patients presenting themselves in an office/ambulatory setting. Cooperates with all members of the health team to meet total patient needs.
